Ilana
Cohen views dance and its development as a component
of the Israeli social body of works created regionally.
Instead of staying in an artistic bubble she feels
is influenced by artists all over the country and
the entire world.
“Half a Royal Gown” is a performance
incorporating drama (with actor Eli Gornstein) based
on poetry by Rachel the Poetess and Shlomit Cohen-Assif
using modern music composed by Uri Vadislavsky. The
“Human Being” project was inspired by
visions and images of the prophet Ezekiel with actor
Matty Seri. Later on playwright Haim Adisis was contacted
to collaborate on the children’s musical “Child’s
Secret” to combine dance, drama and singing.
Ilana Cohen uses the Inbal movement language in an
individual manner so as to advance modern artistic
dance incorporating ethnic and traditional elements
(Sarah Levy-Tanai). As a partner in Israeli choreographic
efforts Ilana Cohen uses techniques of movements to
enhance the Israeli cultural issues that she has absorbed
through the years.
Ilana Cohen’s Roots
Traditional Education followed by Kibbutz Instruction
Cohen spent her adolescence at Kibbutz Beit Oren
Yemenite Jewish tradition and culture as the antithesis
of the Israeli born melting pot molds the concept
behind Cohen’s artistic work aimed at a fusion
of movement materials depicting various
ongoing social conflicts. Cohen’s dance techniques
touch upon past, present and future modes.
Ilana Cohen also staged dance performances that were
commissioned by other groups.
